Chemical Applications

Due to its exceptional properties, SIGRADUR® glassy carbon is advantageous for many different applications in the chemical industry. SIGRADUR® offers high corrosion resistance, which makes it suitable for chemical analysis applications. Compared to conventional laboratory equipment fabricated with platinum, gold, and other corrosion-resistant metals, in addition to special ceramics and fluoric plastics, equipment manufactured with SIGRADUR® glassy carbon provides a number of major advantages:

  • Resistance against all wet decomposition agents

  • No memory effects (uncontrolled adsorption and desorption of elements)

  • No contamination of the analytical sample

  • Resistance against acid and alkaline melts

  • Non-porous, glassy surface

The product range of SIGRADUR® glassy carbon includes crucibles, beakers, boats and dishes for fuming-off, evaporating, melting, and decomposition. Examples illustrating the use of SIGRADUR® G for melt decomposition are shown in Table 1.

[INSERT TABLE 1]

SIGRADUR® glassy carbon is resistant to wet decomposition agents and displays no corrosion-induced wear, even after frequent use. Examples of wet decomposition agents are shown in Table 2.

Due to its electrical conductivity and high corrosion resistance, SIGRADUR® glassy carbon can be used in electrochemistry applications. For example, SIGRADUR® electrodes can be used for cyclic voltammetry, detectors in high pressure liquid chromatography, and organic electrosynthesis.

SIGRADUR® glassy carbon is an isotropic material which exhibits high strength and gas impermeability. These characteristics are an essential requirement for SIGRADUR® components subjected to static and dynamic stresses for laboratory and full-scale plant applications. SIGRADUR® reaction tubes and linings for pressure vessels have been proven successful in regular service.
